Beginner's Step-by-Step Coding Course

By DK (Dorling Kindersley)

Book cover: Beginner's Step-by-Step Coding CourseI was part of the team that created this highly illustrated full-colour book for adults, which builds on the template established in the book Computer Coding For Kids. The Beginner's Coding Course is a 360-page hardback book, that significantly takes readers beyond the scope of the children's title, using more text while keeping the highly illustrated layout that proved popular in Computer Coding For Kids. Both books are published by Dorling Kindersley.

The book introduces important coding concepts, and teaches three key technologies. Scratch is widely used in schools and colleges as an introductory programming language, and this book features three Scratch projects: travel translator, logic puzzle and asteroid dodge, as well as a guide to the language.

Python is a popular programming language in education and commerce today, and the book introduces the language and walks you through four projects: team allocator, project planner, budget manager and a game called Knight's Quest.

The final section of the book covers web technologies (HTML, CSS, and Javascript), leading up to using animation and creating responsive web designs.

The writing team on this book included Clif Kussmaul, Sean McManus, Craig Steele, Claire Quigley, Tammy Pirmann, Martin Goodfellow, Jonathan Hogg, and David Krowitz. The editors were Miezan van Zyl and Suefa Lee.
